Whalefjord & Akranes

The fjord “Whalefjord” is very pictographic, the deep and narrow fjord is surrounded by mountains and on the southside of the fjord is an agricultural area. Hvalfjörður is the location of Iceland’s last working whaling station until the suspension of whaling in 1986. Akranes is a friendly town of 6.700 inhabitants. It is said that it was settled in 880 by 2 Irish brothers. Visit the 2 lighthouses, the newer one is open to the public. Kjalarnes has a beautiful view of Reykjavík and if you want to hike up mount Esja we can also stop in Kollafjörður.
